The portioned segments not only made the bread easier to share and consume, reflecting the communal aspect of Roman meals, but also the efficiency and thoughtfulness in food preparation and distribution. In ancient Rome, white bread was often consumed by the wealthy, while darker bread was typically eaten by the poor.
