Caerlaverock Castle stands largely complete and is amongst the foremost examples of Scottish medieval secular architecture. Its triangular-shaped curtain wall is unique in Britain, and the Nithsdale Lodging within, dating from the 1630s, is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland. Caerlaverock Castle was the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of the great noble families in southern Scotland. The castle is famous in history and literature through its siege by Edward I of England in 1300, commemorated in the contemporary poem, The Siege of Caerlaverock. It was captured in 1640 by the Covenanters after a protracted siege and thereafter abandoned as a lordly residence. Check out our Caerlaverock collection here. Quiriguá Stela K - shown in relation to image taken in 1909 showing the west (right) and east (left) sides of the monument. The photo was taken during fieldwork at the site by Edgar Hewett, Director of the School of American Archaeology in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This carved stone monument belongs to the Maya site of Quiriguá, located in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The USF CDHGI team is working in collaboration with Guatemalan archaeologists and site management to record stela, monuments, and carvings, as well as terrain and site landscape details.
