In the mid-1960s, various forms of VTOL were all the rage. In 1965, Lockheed responded to the U.S. Army's RFP with the CL-945 concept, a design for a retractable rotor helicopter. At low speeds and hovering, it will operate as a helicopter; at higher speeds, an aircraft-style propulsion system will power it; at much higher speeds than helicopters typically achieve, the rotors will stop spinning, and Fold back and stow away for minimal resistance.
