The Tower of Hercules (Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, it was known as the “Farum Brigantium". The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek Φάρος Pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The structure stands 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. It was built in the 1st century and renovated in 1791, and is the oldest lighthouse of the world. In Greek mythology, Meleager was a hero venerated in his temenos at Calydon in Aetolia. Meleager was the son of Althaea and the vintner Oeneus and, according to some accounts father of Parthenopeus and Polydora. The hero stands with his dog at his side, holding a spear with which, according to the myth, he has killed the Calydonian boar. The many extant copies show that the statue reproduces a famous Greek work from around 340 B.C.
