Il prezioso manufatto bronzeo del XIV secolo, proveniente dalla collezione Luzzetti, appartiene alla tipologia dei lettorili liturgici a forma di aquila documentati, a partire dal tardo Trecento, su supporti autonomi. La presenza di artigli ricurvi ci suggerisce infatti che l’originaria collocazione dell’aquila doveva essere su una sfera, oggi non più esistente, sostituita da un capitello rovesciato di incerta datazione. Grandi e lunghe ali spiegate – con funzione di supporto del libro liturgico – mettono in mostra il bellissimo piumaggio, minutamente descritto con gusto calligrafico, che ricopre tutto il rapace.
