Approximately 15 cm x 8 cm Basket Handle Egypt Land of Goshen New Kingdom PeriodFrom the excavation at Mendes in the Delta region known as the Land of Goshen an important grain and fiber growing region of northern Egypt. This piece is likely from the later period of this site and is associated with the farmers who worked the fields to supply the Temple Complex of Mendes (the Ram-headed diety. This is from a private collection. This piece was probably created during the equivalent Late Archaic time period in the SW USA. Archaic hunter gatherers had not yet made the transition to agriculture, had no written language and no pottery. Hypostyle hall of the Hathor shrine at the temple of Hatshepsut was the most difficult part of the photoscanning project from scientific grant “Dialog” (under directory of Jadwiga Iwaszczuk PhD, founded by National Science Centre of Poland for collaboration of IKŚiO PAN (Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures, Polish Academy of Science), PCMA UW (Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw) and Ministry of Antiquities of Arab Republic of Egypt.
Model was created from 5159 photos taken during a one hour of light gap per day, when the temple is covered by the shadow of the mountain in the late afternoon, but with still enough light for sharp images. TT 159 and TT 286 were ecavated by Clarence Fisher (University of Pennsylvania) in 1921-1923 in Dra Abu El Naga (a site on the West Bank of Luxor, housing hundreds of noblemen’s tombs dating from the Middle Kingdom, scattered periods in the 18th-26th Dynasties, and the Ptolemaic period). In response to the Ministry of Antiquities’ (MoA) desire to develop the site, TT 159, the 19th Dynasty tomb of the ‘Fourth Prophet of Amun, Raya’ and his wife Mutemwia and TT 286, the 20th Dynasty tomb of ‘the Scribe of the Table, Niay’, were selected for improvement by ARCE, with funding from USAID. In addition to conserving and opening the two tombs in 2019 through the training of 13 conservators from MoA, ARCE also provided more than 537 jobs to local workers who assisted in clearing the site and building visitor infrastructure.
